My colleague and friend teaches a course at NDU entitled: Applications of Linear Algebra. So, I thought that it will beneficial to get her and her students involved in our Blog!

The course “MAT 214” entitled “Applied Linear Algebra” is basically designed for “Business Computing” students. It covers many real-life applications of linear algebra. To illustrate, Gaussian or Gauss-Jordan elimination can be used to solve a linear system representing a network for a traffic flow in a city. In addition, if we have some data represented by a number of points, like for instance the population of a country for some past four years, we can find a polynomial whose graph passes through the points and try to predict results for future years.
Another interesting application is cryptography which consists of transforming a message such as “Meet me on Tuesday in the same cafeteria” into a secret code, or cryptogram and vice versa by the means of matrix multiplication. Finally, the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix have an important application included in this course. In fact, they help in maintaining a stable growth for a population such as a population of rats or rabbits in a certain laboratory.
Which application(s) covered so far in the course did you find personally interesting? Why?
And which one did you find the most relevant to your major? Justify your answer by explaining how it can be applied in your domain.
Please, browse in the blog , read other posts, choose one post and comment on it.
I personally found that the part concerning the cryptography is interesting, since from now on I can share secret messages with others with my new language.

The topic that i found the most relevant to my major (Business Computing) is the least squares regression line. This method might be applied in a program where the user can input data and get as output an estimation for example of the demand when the price of a certain product increases by a certain amount...

ReplyDeleteThe most topic that i found relevant to my major business computing was Network analysis. this method allow the user to composes branches and junctions.
ReplyDeleteThe topic that i found most interesting is cryptography since it allows the user to send coded messages. It is fun and easy to use unlike other codes as the Morse Code.

The part that concerns Decoding matrix interested me because it makes use of a large matrix to encode a message. The receiver of the message decodes it using the inverse of the matrix.

I really found Cryptography quite interesting. In addition also to most of the applications...

Cryptography is relevant to my major(Business Computing) since we can use it to encode credit card Numbers of a user who wants to buy something over the internet. His information is sent through many destinations and might also be saved as cookies, so the imformation acquired from the user should be seculy saved this is where cryptography plays it role.

ELIE YOUNAN: Cryptography is relevant to my major, because it is a message written according to a secret code.In addition i like to decode the encoding messages and find the secret code written, also to encodes messages
ReplyDeleteNASSIF EID:I really found Cryptography interesting because I learnt some probability theory, information theory and number theory to answer questions about how vulnerable the methods of sending secrets are. This has a great number of applications to internet credit card transactions, wireless communication and electronic voting.
ReplyDeleteDaniel Lattouf: My best chapter is cryptography because you can write a word or phrase or a message to someone you know only because the message is written according to a secret code .
ReplyDeleteWe can use only one method to encode and decode the message, which is matrix multiplication
Anthony Choucair: Cryptography is the most relevant to my major, and in addition it is a very good code to secretly talk to someone
